Recharge your skin with superfoods in The Body Shop’s Expert Facial Masks: Review

The Body Shop’s Expert Facial Masks
We all know what superfoods are, thanks to our health-conscious friends or our Instagram feed (I’m sure we see lots of food flatlays with fresh produce time and again).  Super nutrient-rich and has lots of health benefits, it’s no wonder superfoods are increasingly making its way into the world’s diet exponentially. Who knew we would pay so much attention to superfoods such as acai berries and green tea now?
While that acai berry yoghurt bowl might be helping you to radiate glow from within, you just need a little more help in getting your skin to look as healthy as you (think you) feel. With The Body Shop’s NEW Expert Facial Masksinspired by traditional beauty remedies from around the world, you can expect your skin to look and feel as awesome as you do inside. Each jar is packed, crushed and drizzled with natural ingredients and contains a secret power – from purifying to nourishing and even hydrating!

Made with 100% vegetarian ingredients (Himalayan Charcoal, British Rose and Amazonian Acai masks are actually 100% vegan) and formulated without parabens, paraffins, silicone or mineral oils – you know that your skin is in good care with these wholesome beauty recipes.

For skin that needs some detoxifying and to release impurities and toxins for a healthy-looking, youthful glow, try the Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask. Inspired by Ayurvedictraditions, this mud mask contains some powerful ingredients such as:
  • Bamboo Charcoal – from the Himalayan foothills; to flush out impurities and excess oils
  • Green Tea Leaves – from Japan; rich in antioxidants and catechins, to effectively exfoliate the skin
  • Community Trade Organic Tea Tree Oil – from Kenya; to help maintain clarity of skin

Upon application, you’ll feel the minty, cooling effect from the tea tree oil while the green tea leaves and bamboo charcoal help to detoxify and purify. Literally this helps to deeply cleanse and unclog pores for refined skin that is smooth and glowy!
I like that there are real green tea leaves and I believe fine charcoal bits as well, such that you can physically exfoliate the surface of the skin. The smell reminds me of my visit to a spa boutique – it’s therapeutic and relaxing.
For dehydrated skin that lacks the healthy, dewy glow, it’s time to quench and re-plump it with moisture with the British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask! Inspired by the European bathing rituals (and possibly the ancient Chinese as well), the refreshing gel mask is infused with real natural ingredients:
  • Rose – with real rose petals and essence of handpicked roses from Britain; to replenish the skin’s water reserves
  • Rosehip Oil – from Chile; rich in repairing Omega 3 and 6 that helps tone skin
  • Community Trade Organic Aloe Vera – from Mexico; to calm and soothe skin

This has got to be one of my favourite masks because it contains rose! I love anything related to roses, especially in skincare! With roses, you know that it’s going to smell good. Super good.
On cleansed skin, apply a generous amount all over and to thoroughly replenish the skin with moisture. The rose essence will hydrate and help to retain the moisture too. Once you wash it off, your skin will thank you for the dewy and super smooth feel.
If you are fretting over dull skin, it’s time to look for the Ethiopian Honey Deep Nourishing Mask for an intense dose of replenishing nourishment! Feel your skin becoming soft and smooth again with this indulgent melting honey mask. Inspired by African healing and soothing rituals, the mask contains some of the finest natural ingredients as well:
  • Community Trade Honey – from Ethiopia; rich in nutrients that replenish and retain moisture to comfort and revive depleted skin
  • Community Trade Marula Oil – from Namibia; a coldpressed light oil to restore and improve skin elasticity
  • Community Trade Organic Olive Oil – from Italy; rich in Omega 9 that helps boost skin elasticity and prevents dryness

With the texture of real honey, it looks so ready to be eaten! A dream come true for dry skin, this mask is perfect for nourishing the skin.
We know honey is antioxidant-rich and naturally anti-bacterial, but do you know that it is also a fantastic humectant that attracts water to the skin’s surface? The decadent texture of this mask will intensely soothe and moisturise to replenish skin and enhance the skin’s natural barrier function, leaving it suppler, soft and restored.
One of my favourites as well for its exfoliating and brightening properties, the Chinese Ginseng & Rice Clarifying Polishing Mask is one to have if you are looking for an intense treatment to remove dullness and unevenness. Inspired by Chinese traditions, this creamy exfoliating mask combines natural ingredients sourced from Northeast Asia and South America:
  • Ginseng Extract – from China; for skin toning and stimulating properties that help revitalise skin
  • Rice Extract – from China; to moisturise and brighten the skin
  • Community Trade Organic Sesame Seed Oil – from Nicaragua; rich in oleic and linoleic acid to soften the skin

We are aware that rice is staple food for almost half the world’s population, so it’s not surprising to know that it’s being used in some of the world’s oldest beauty remedies. This mask is ideal for dull skin as rice extract helps to soothe and calm skin irritation, while brightening the skin’s surface. Additionally, Ginseng, a five millennia-old Chinese superfood with an energy and immuneboosting reputation is rich in phytonutrients, catechins, gallic tannins as well as chlorogenic acid that helps aid cell renewal processes, while sesame seed oil does its magic of softening and moisturising skin.
With these 3 ingredients, I’m imagining a bowl of Ginseng Chicken Soup with fragrant rice topped with sesame oil… Oops, I meant a jar of nutritious mask for the skin! The mask actually smells more like ginseng than anything else though.
Too tired and stressed up from work or school? Try the Amazonian Acai Energising Radiance Mask for a fast recharge! Inspired by the rituals of Amazonian tribes, this juicy fresh mask smells so good that looks like it can be part of your breakfast! It is also super-packed with natural ingredients from South America, Brazil, such as:
  • Acai Berry Extract – rich in anti-oxidants and vitamin C to fight the appearance of fatigue
  • Guarana Seed Extract – high concentration of caffeine helps to boost energy
  • Community Trade Organic Babassu Oil – an effective nut oil to soften, smooth and revitalise skin

Acai berries are known to be rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, B, C, and E for reviving skin, healing damaged skin cells, and restoring moisture while guarana is well known for its energising properties. Marry that with babassu oil (known to help support the lipid layer defence) and this mask helps to supercharge your skin for instant radiance with visibly smoother texture!
Oh and it has a jam-like texture which really makes me feel like tasting it every time I put it on. Teehee, I MIGHT just try it…
In addition, with all 5 masks targeting various skin concerns, you’ll be able to multi-mask to address a few concerns at the same time!
If you have sleepy, stressed out skin that has lost its get up and glow, try The Replenish & Recharge Facial.

  1. I was wondering how come you apply all three (Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow, British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask, and the Chinese Ginseng & Rice Clarifying Polishing Mask) to your face. What does that do? I have the first two, but I would apply the Himalayan Charcoal the first three days then the next three days I used the British Rose. IS the out outcome more better to use all three?

    1. Hello there! I apply all 3 at once to target different skin concerns! It’s a popular trend nowadays – multi-masking! Some parts of my skin is really dry so I avoid having the Himalayan Charcoal because it’s a clay mask and it tends to absorb oil. I usually use different masks for different parts of my face to maximise the outcome! 🙂

  2. I don’t know if you got my comment, but I was wondering why you apply all three masks on in one sitting. I used Himalayan mask one first for the first three days then I used the British Rose the next three days. Is that a bad way to go about it?
