Need a quick and effective skin-fix? Take the Kiehl’s 5-Day #BreakoutControl Challenge! I’ve took on the challenge about a week ago because the “time of the month” was breaking out my skin yet again. With a skincare regime of 6 products, I’m pleased to share my thoughts on the entire regime and how I managed to lighten some of my recent acne scars to prepare myself for some house visiting this weekend.
If you’ve been following my blog for some time now, you’ll know that I’m no stranger to most of the products except the NEW Breakout Control duo – a spot treatment cream and a facial lotion – dedicated to effectively target and reduce spots within days!
Contest details at the end, don’t miss out!~
1. The Cleanser
Let’s not get too excited about the new power duo. I’ll be sharing my regime based on the order I use the products and naturally, it starts with one of my favourite facial cleansers, the Kiehl’s Calendula Deep-Cleansing Foaming Facial Wash. No joke, I’ve converted some of my friends to switch to this powerful yet gentle facial cleanser, just because it’s effective in removing the dirt and gunk on the skin.
The Calendula cleanser is a gel-based cleanser that actually doesn’t foam much despite its name. It has a nice mild floral scent which I enjoy. Being a gentle cleanser, it helps to cleanse the skin thoroughly without stripping the oils, hence, is safe for sensitive skin as well. After cleansing, you’ll feel that your skin is refreshed and soft without the squeaky-clean feel. As the Calendula range serves oily skin better, you might want to alternate this if you’ve got dry skin. I felt that it was a tad drying on mine when I use it daily.
2. The Toner
Working hand-in-hand to complement the Calendula cleanser, the Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner seeks to gently remove any impurity residues to further cleanse and soothe the skin. Being alcohol-free, you need not worry that it’ll cause dryness or irritate your sensitive skin.
I usually use this with a cotton pad to gently wipe on my skin and usually, even after thorough cleansing, you’ll still find some residue on the cotton pad. By doing so, you’ll get to also remove any dead skin cells, making sure your skin is kept refreshed and renewed. The toner has the same mild floral scent like its cleanser buddy.
3. The Spot Treatment
Oh yes, we’ve reached one of the highlights in the Breakout Challenge! It’s the NEW Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions™ Breakout Control Targeted Acne Spot Treatment! I must say that this has been my life saver when it comes to angry acne spots!
This targeted blemish spot treatment helps to rapidly reduce the appearance of acne breakouts. Formulated with Sulfur for the purpose of driving out acne and Vitamin B3 to prevent pigmentation, the acne spot treatment blends evenly into skin and really works to reduce the appearance of blemishes in days! However, even though it helps to clear acne quickly, the smell of sulfur is pretty strong for this one. Even when worn underneath makeup, be sure to smell this the entire day. It’s yellow-tinted but blends clear into the skin.
As this is a relatively strong spot treatment, be sure to only apply to the blemishes 2-3 times a week instead of daily, so that you do not excessively dry out the skin and cause peeling.
4. The Corrector
Following the spot treatment, the Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions™ Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution is your choice for reducing acne scars overtime. I’ve started using this back in 2014 and I found that it can really help lighten your pigmentation with very diligent use.
Formulated to have a visible impact on a broad spectrum of dark spots, this clear and corrective formula visibly diminishes the number and intensity of dark spots and discolorations with time. With a potent, latest-generation clarifying complex of Activated C, White Birch and Peony Extracts, the formula penetrates the skin’s surface to help correct the appearance of dark spots and unify skin tone.
The serum is relatively watery and absorbs into the skin quickly without leaving any sticky feel. It has a nice mild scent as well, which makes for a joy during application. You may want to read my thoughts on this serum when I first tried it back in 2014 here.
5. The Lotion
With treatment comes prevention, so that your skin is protected from future outbreaks. The Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions™ Breakout Control Blemish Treatment Facial Lotion is a complementary facial lotion to the spot acne treatment that you can use all over the skin to prevent blemishes while simultaneously soothing redness.
With 1.5% Salicylic Acid and Vitamin B3, this gentle milky lotion helps to restore your skin’s radiance and softness. In my opinion, use this for a week every night and reduce usage of this until the acne’s cleared out because it can be drying to the skin as well.
6. The Sunscreen
So, what comes after treatment and prevention? It’s protection of course! Acne and acne scars are one of the hardest things to treat and require much effort and time. Even though I’m somewhat allergic to sunscreen, surprisingly the Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions™ Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Sunscreen didn’t cause any allergic reaction after 3 days! I’m seeing myself using more of this since it seems skin-friendly to me.
You may want to read my detailed review here that I did back in 2015 when I first tried the sunscreen out. I like that it doesn’t leave a white cast while giving you ample sun care and protection in the sunny Singapore weather.
The Results
So, having tried all the products conscientiously for 5 days, let’s see the verdict!
On Day 0, I’ve had a few bright red spots on the skin due to an acne outbreak. On Day 5, the huge red acne spot on the left turned into a mild pink one and several spots lightened as well. My skin felt slightly clearer but was quite dry after intense treatment for 5 days. I had to hydrate a lot following the regime to regain the moisture in my skin. But well, I say that the 5-Day Breakout Challenge was a success, what do you think?
Create yourself and be gorgeous!
XOXO, Roanna.
