Kat Von D Beauty: Review

When I say Kat Von, you say D! Kat Von D!~

It’s a lovely Friday, what are you up to? For me, I’m of course at work but I wanna share a piece of good news to all you fellow beauty junkies in Singapore! You guessed it! Kat Von D Beauty is hitting our shores right next month! See all the best sellers here? You’re going to get a chance to touch, feel and try them out reaaaaal soon! Wait for it…

Here’s a quick shot of Kat Von D when she came to Singapore! It was a celebratory launch in Chijmes, together with our favourite beauty retailer, Sephora! Beautiful backdrop, don’t ya think? 😉

(And she said,”Kat Von D Beauty is a creative outlet for everyone, from beginners to pros and even to makeup-junkies like myself!”)

Without further ado, let’s delve deeper into some of Kat Von D’s favourite products! The trend is all about contouring right now. Having a chiseled, sculpted face with highlighted cheekbones is taking the makeup scene by storm now. This Kat Von D Shade + Light Face Contour Palette will be perfect for all you contour junkies.

Look at the rugged black lettering, isn’t it very Kat Von D?! As a tattoo artist, the packaging of the entire makeup range reflects her style, her passion and creativity. I love how the packaging’s so rocker chic, much like my everyday style. When you flip open the palette, you’ll be greeted by an array of matte shades – three contour and three highlight.

Inspired by shadow and light, the palette is carefully put together to allow you the freedom of creating depth and dimension on your skin. Take artistry shading into your own hands to effortlessly sculpt, chisel, shape, and slenderise your features for enhanced definition!

The shades are made matte so that you’ll be able to capture the true hues of shadow and light. With the three contour shades for creating realistic shadows to recede your facial features and three highlight shades to amplify dimension with a soft subtle luminosity, this palette makes contouring a breeze, minus all the mess you might get yourself into!

These silky, buildable and very blendable powders blend easily into the skin for a flawless, fade-proof finish which definitely flatters every skin tone and face shape with the range of shades.

The 6 shades are:

  • Highlight
    • Lucid – pinkish nude
    • Lyric – yellow beige
    • Levitation – soft peach
  • Contour
    • Sombre – true taupe
    • Shadowplay – soft brown
    • Subconscious – deep brown
Formulated without parabens, sulfates and phthalates, this palette is a keeper.
To complement the palette, an exclusive dual-ended brush ergonomically designed with an angled end for contouring and a tapered domed end for highlighting was created! The Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Brush is encased within a sleek protective case, which in my opinion, looks like a coffin. Badass huh?
I’ve never really liked dual-ended brushes although they are practical, for the fact that I like to store my brushes upright when I’m not using so being dual-ended means it has to sit horizontally. Storing it in the case really takes up lots of space PLUS, I’m pretty sure I’ll never touch the brush again just because it makes it all inconvenient when it’s not placed together in my brush holder together with its counterparts.
Anyway, the bristles are super amazingly soft. Artfully constructed with white-tipped synthetic bristles on both ends, the gradient brush hairs pick up and diffuse pigments in seamless manner, bringing you your desired look in seconds.

THIS. This is my absolute favourite from the entire range just because eyeshadows are my weakness. The Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad features three colour quads in neutral, cool, and warm shades in total and here I have Plum with me. Just continue ogling at the packaging, I forgive you. Feels like the palette has descended from the Harry Potter series with its vintage lettering and embossing.

Who says only the face needs to be contoured? Transform your eyes via the art of contouring with these matte palettes! There are 4 palettes available, namely:

  • Rust – matte brownish reds
  • Sage – matte greens
  • Plum – matte purples
  • Smoke – matte cool grays

Contour your way to sultry, smokey eyes with the neutral base, contour, define, and highlight shades! Each quad includes an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide illustrated by Kat Von D, so you easily follow your way through the steps of achieving defined and contoured eyes.

Here are swatches for all 4 quads:

What’s an eye look without winged, defined liner? The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Satin Black is going to let you achieve that sexy cat eyes. This liquid eyeliner has a really fine brush tip for effortless, precise application. It’s pigmentation is pretty okay, buildable I would say.

Said to be waterproof on top of being fade-, melt-, crack-, and run-resistant, I must say that it pretty much lives up to expectations. The below swatch was taken after I’ve ran my fingers through the pigment, rubbing for a few times. Budge-proof, checked!

The last highlight? Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick. Aanother badass packaging we have here with the studded black casing. When you twist it up, you’ll be greeted with a bullet that’s engraved with Kat Von D’s logo in the KVD lettering. Stunning.

I have the shade in L.U.V., a matte rich violet which is a cult favourite! Probably not the best violet shade to be wearing in Asia but I’ve tried this to work, it stays on beautifully even after my meals. Like most mattes, this will definitely dry your lips but not extensively and it’s still comfortable even after hours of wear.

Check out that pigmentation. You could still that heart lined with the Tatto Liner but it still covers pretty much most of it.

With all these I’ve created my rocker chic look 😉 Defined everything including the lips. I love that sexy purple lipstick! It’s quite wearable despite its strong violet shade.

For the eyes, I’ve used the base shade all over the eyelids, the contour shade on the crease, the define shade on the outer V of the eyes and of course, the highlight shade at the brow bone, inner eye corners and lower lash line.

Below is a close up of the face contour, eye and lip makeup:

Kat Von D: “People often tell me, ‘Having your own makeup line must be a dream come true!’ But the truth is, never in a million years did I ever imagine I’d be here celebrating all these wonderful years of beauty with you all!”
Kat Von D will be launched in Sephora Singapore in July. Wait for it~ Meanwhile, you can shop them off Sephora’s U.S. site via Shopandbox!
Create yourself and be gorgeous!
XOXO, Roanna.
