Getting a Fraxel Dual Laser Rejuvenation for my acne scars at Halley Aesthetics: Review

Halley Fraxel Dual Laser

For the longest time, I’ve been piqued with acne issues which affected my self-confidence. I can’t imagine going back to the days when all I worried about was my skin! Now, despite having clearer skin, I still suffer from the aftermath of acne – pores and scarring. In hopes of gaining a smoother complexion, I made my way to Halley Medical Aesthetics to explore treatment options.

With my concerns in mind, I consulted Dr. Terence Tan on the options I have to treat my enlarged pores. Much to my surprise, I discovered that my “large pores” were post-acne scars (the deep-pitted ones)! To tackle those old scars, Dr. Terence Tan suggested a Fraxel Dual Laser Rejuvenation and then shared the treatment process in detail.

What is Fraxel Dual Laser Rejuvenation?

The Fraxel Dual Laser is a non-ablative facial rejuvenation to safely treat the superficial and deeper layers of the skin through two wavelengths:

  • 1550nm Er:Glass Laser – penetrates deep into the skin to address wrinkles and acne scars
  • 1927nm Thullium Laser – addresses skin tone, texture, pigmentation, and other superficial skin growths or signs of aging

To summarise, this fractional laser works by targeting damaged skin with microscopic laser columns. It penetrates deep into the skin, treating only a fraction of skin at a time with surrounding tissues untouched. With that, it also means that recovery time is much shorter compared to traditional lasers that target the surface (yay!). In fact, I was told that I could put on makeup after the laser and still look alright!

The Treatment Process

As I was very excited in seeing the results, I got the treatment done straight after my consultation, despite not planning for any downtime. Well, we’ve got makeup to help cover right?

First, we took some photos of my bare skin before applying numbing cream for my skin.

Dr. Terence Tan made the entire treatment a breeze with his jokes and chats about life throughout the 20 minutes! I was literally trying to control my laughter half the time while he went on with the laser.

Pain wise, I would say that my pain threshold is quite high, hence I wasn’t nervous at all. At first, there wasn’t much sensation but as the laser went on a couple of times, I could increasingly feel a tingling and warm sensation, which was bearable.

Post-treatment and Recovery

When the treatment was completed, a Super Recovery Cream (SGD40.80) was applied onto my face to help promote recovery. The cream contains a blend of Vitamins E & K, Arnica Extract, Centella Asiatica (or Cica), Green Tea and Grape Seed Oil to reduce bruising and accelerate skin repair.

Looking in the mirror, I thought I would my face would be as red as a cooked lobster but it wasn’t as bad as I thought! My face felt a bit swollen and red, but I could pat on some foundation and head for my dinner date afterwards. My friend couldn’t even tell I did a laser to my skin!

Over the next few days, my skin started to scab temporarily, which was communicated to me during the consultation. By the 3rd day, I could feel that my skin was very dry as it was covered by tiny scabs. I managed to get them covered up with makeup, and since we’re wearing masks nowadays, much of my face isn’t exposed (phew!). There was absolutely nothing for me to worry about post-laser!

Day by day, the scabs start fading away to reveal a smoother and more youthful looking complexion. It almost feels as if I had a layer of skin removed and unveiled!

Afterthoughts

As some of my acne scars were quite deep considering I had them for years now, Dr. Terence Tan did mention that we’d probably need a few sessions to see full results. Honestly, even after just one session, I could see a difference to my skin. My pores have visibly shrunken, and some of my acne scars aren’t as deeply pitted anymore. I feel more confident baring my naked skin now and in fact, I haven’t been wearing much makeup these days!
