It’s matte-ness (madness) everywhere with the innovation of liquid lipsticks! And you thought they would stop at the glossy, creamy finishes but guess what? Liquid matte lipsticks are part of the current makeup trend now, that every beauty brand you find in the market is hopping onto the bandwagon. Too Faced, one of my favourite brands since I’ve started exploring makeup, has also released its version of the liquid matte lipsticks – Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick.
There are 17 shades altogether, ranging from your usual reds and pinks to exotic shades such as deep blue, and even deeper shades of brown and berry. I only have 7 shades here with me and I reckon these will be the more popular and wearable shades that people like me and you will grab off the shelves. Let’s dig deeper into the formulation and how it wears, shall we? 😉
The first thing that truly impressed me when I unboxed these was the packaging. If you’re familiar with the original Melted Lipsticks, you’ll find that the transparent plastic tubes of these Melted Mattes have got a striking resemblance to the squeeze-tube packaging. It’s solid, my friend. On the tubes, you’ll literally feel the raised lettering of the “Melted matte” and notice the little hearts on the “e”s? So adorable you have to agree with me.
No prizes for guessing, the applicator is a doe-foot wand to help you with precise application. The size of the wand fits nicely onto your lips so no worries on it getting all over the place. It’s pretty easy to trace and line the lips with this.
Talking about the formula, with matte lipsticks, you’ll definitely find it a lot more drying than with usual formulas, but this particular one is another gem in the sea of liquid mattes. Infused with antioxidant-rich Avocado Oil and Vitamin E, the formula helps to moisturise, preventing dry, flaky lips. With Hyaluronic Filling Spheres, lip lines are smoothed and added Volluip, a natural, no-sting lip plumper, creates a smooth canvas for the matte colour to adhere onto the lips smoothly.
A Too Faced fan will know that pigmentation is one of the key areas of focus when the brand develops its products. The staying power of a stain coupled with intense color of a liquid lipstick in one long-wearing formula makes this a beauty in your makeup trove. Seriously, the high impact colour is impressive and it doesn’t budge once it sets. However, for some reason, I didn’t think that all shades were of equal quality. I felt that the lighter shades like 1998 and Feelin’ Myself were slightly drying as compared to the deeper shades such as Lady Balls, Bend & Snap etc.
Swatches below! The 7 shades I tried are:
- Cool Girl – matte true nude
- Lady Balls – matte true red
- Bend & Snap – matte deep raspberry
- It’s Happening! – matte bright magenta
- 1988 – matte bright bubblegum pink
- Feelin’ Myself – matte soft peachy-pink
- Mrs. Roper – matte bright tangerine
Swatches were taken with just one swipe on the arm. I’m truly amazed at the pigmentation! The plus point of this liquid matte lipstick is that you are still able to apply another layer without messing up the first layer. As with liquid mattes that are drying, you’ll find that applying another coat will cause clumping and you’ll completely ruin the lipstick you’ve put on. For those who are new to liquid mattes, you’ll find comfort in this one.
Even though there are a considerable number of shades in this collection, I find that the shade range is pretty limited. 4 are super deep shades, while another 5-6 are pale nudes and you’re left with about 7 wearable shades that are suitable for most skin tones. Even among the 7 shades, only Lady Balls, Bend & Snap and It’s Happening suited my skin tone. I had to find different ways to make the other shades work for my skin tone and that includes dabbing the liquid mattes just onto the inner lip area to create ombre lips etc.
Here are more swatches from some of the other shades being swatched during Sephora’s Press Event I attended earlier.
Notice how it looks a lot more drying on my lips with Cool Girl, Feelin’ Myself and especially 1998? That’s what I mean by the lighter shades looking seemingly drier than the deeper shades.
Well, overall, the Melted Mattes fared pretty well and is really super long-lasting. I could just wear Bend & Snap for the entire day without touching up! But of course, if you have got dry lips, applying a lip balm before any liquid matte lipstick would be ideal.
So, would you be getting any? Which shade(s) is/are your favourite?
